Experimental Cooking: (healthy-ish) Homemade Cream Cheese Danish…

24 May

I love cheese danishes!

yum! [photo source click on photo]

Each danish is about 300 calories.  Also, I am not huge on frosting. Although I love the cheese danish part.  I googled to see if there were any recipes that were somewhat healthier.  Well, I found a recipe that really isn’t that much healthier, but it has less sugar as it just has powdered sugar.

Here it is the Lower Fat Cream Cheese Danish Recipe:

  • 8 reduced fat crescent rolls
  • 1 egg white
  • 8 ounces low fat cream cheese
  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • cream together egg white, cream cheese, and vanilla
  • lay half the can of crescent rolls in the bottom of a square baking pan lined with parchment paper, pressing together seams in rolls to make one sheet
  • spread cream cheese mixuture atop crescent roll crust
  • put other half crescent rolls on top
  • bake at 350 for about 20 minutes or until browned on top
  • sprinkle with powdered sugar while warm
  • you can also add a little sugar or splenda to filling and I use egg beaters rather than regular egg white
  • you may also mix powdered sugar with a couple drops of milk and drizzle over the top for a glaze
It doesn’t look like the one above but it makes a savory danish that fed my craving.  It also would be a great dish if we ever have breakfast Guests with all of our empty rooms in our house!

it has 196 calories per piece if you cut it into 8 pieces.
