Driving up Pacific Highway…

16 Mar

Zoom zoom!  Like I mentioned in my previous blog, our goal was to drive the trek from LA to San Fran right after landing at noon!

As you can see it is quite the treck and ther are lots of different paths!  We did a split between 101 and 1 as just heading up 1 takes about 9-10 hours and we had just spent 5 hours on a plane!

We got our rental car quickly and headed off.  Of first stop was In and Out Burger for lunch! I was curious to try it and we were happily entertained!  I love the simplicity of it and the delicious food!

We then settled back and were attempting to race the sun to make it to see some giant redwoods while it was still light.

It was a very scenic view, not a lot of traffic, just our thoughts, excitement to be on vacation, have the time to relax, and each other.  We talked about random things, our plans for the week, how thankful we were to be together, but mainly just enjoyed the view and the time together.

It was an easy drive and more developed than my husband remembered it from driving with his dad.  However, if you do decide to ever drive it, here are my tips:

  • Do it during the day. A good chunk of it is winding roads next to the ocean with NO GUARD RAILS.
  • Follow the speed limit signs around curves. Some of them made me go Eeee!
  • Make sure you have plenty of Gas. Gas stops are far and few between on Highway 1.

It was great to see, and I feel a very amusing bonding experience as you really have to trust the person you are with as some of those curves are sharp!

We made it right after it was dark to see some giant redwoods and ran out to see them even though it was getting cold!

It was worth it.  Maybe a bit of a crazy plan.  13 hours of traveling for our first day as the drive from LAX to San Fran took about 8 hours.  However, we really enjoyed it and have some amazing memories from the trip!

You are so adventurous! We hate the 101, but I’m assuming there’s less traffic as you go north than here? Anyway, I’m glad you had a fun drive. Also, glad you tried In N Out. I find it so over-rated, but I know it’s one of those “must do’s” that people tell you about sort of like Pink’s Hot Dogs (which we’ve never tried because the line is always so crazy and I’m not a hot dog person anyway). lol
