Marriage Survivial: visiting home to see friends and familly…

12 Aug

My husband and I have been married for three years.  We spent the first two years of our marriage spending all of our spare vacation time visiting home as both of our families live out of state in two different states.

While we enjoyed getting to see them, we realized we weren’t spending time for us or to go on vacations that we wanted!  So we came up with a plan… alternating years.  One year we visit one family the next year the next.  We wanted to start our own lives and get some vacation experiences in.

Well, lucky for us the majority of people understood.  Once we explain it to people that dont, they normally do.  We’ve had some great vacations since then.

However, when we do go home now and see extended family we always run into the same situation.  People are comfortable with the familiar.  They tend to talk to those they are most comfortable with – the people they see all the time.  We do always hear the “hows Florida?” and other general questions.   And we don’t blame anyone.  We enjoy just seeing them.  We also are grateful to have each other.  We talk to each other and just keep each other company.  It’s amazing and nice.

So if you ever find yourselves in our shoes… don’t sweat it.  They are still happy to see you.  Just understand you don’t see them all the time. Just enjoy your time together!

Great advice. I’m glad you’ve been enjoying your vacation time.
